Ivica Matošević is unique among Istrian winemakers. He has no fairy-tale, centuries-old family heritage entwined with viticulture and vinification and modest forebearers that imparted their wealth of wisdom and experience down to their descendants. He is simply a man who, along with his closest friends, transformed his passion for wine, his love of life, and his tenacity to do what others say can’t be done into a successful winery. Over fifteen years ago, Matošević walked away from the lucrative potential of his PhD and followed his “rock & roll” heart into the vineyards and never looked back.
Today, Matošević Wines is a collection of courageous spirits less concerned with how their story began than how it will turn out. They are adventure-seekers just crazy enough to discuss the weather with the sun and the clouds and compliment and embolden the grapes growing in the vineyards of Buje and Grimalda. Matošević and his entourage of Istrian misfits are glad to write their own myth and usher consumers to their personal "happily ever after" in their wine.
